A trip on the Ecclesbourne Valley Railway, that runs between Wirksworth and Duffield, is a great day out and a good way of exploring heritage.

Volunteers are on hand to describe the fantastic history behind our local railways.

You can also enjoy an afternoon tea or Sunday roast in the dining car.

England is a wonderful country, with stunning countryside and a rich history.

Derbyshire is home to the Peak District National Park and the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution, amongst so much else.

Tourism opportunities are abundant, and that’s why I met with Visit Peak District & Derbyshire to discuss what I can do to help support them.

This week, the government announced that it is creating a new ten-year National Youth Strategy to tackle the challenges that young people face. We need to put young people back at the centre of decision-making on policies that affect them.

For years they have been sidelined, and it is unsurprising that they feel like politics works against them. Previous governments have not invested in young people, which has left them feeling isolated and alienated from the communities around them.

The numbers are stark – since 2010, local authority spending on youth has reduced by 73% which means that over £1 billion less is being spent on young people each year.

It is really important that young people respond to this consultation, so that they have a say in their own destiny and meaningful choices in their lives.

Please pass this link on and encourage the young people you know to take part: https://ift.tt/SiaQGvB

I dropped in recently at Belper Foodbank, which does great work providing a hot meal and a warm space for people who need it. The staff were open and supportive, and Citizens Advice were also on hand to provide assistance.

While their work is amazing, it is sad that this service is needed at all. When I was younger, we didn’t have foodbanks. Since 2010, the numbers have massively increased.

This is an appalling legacy of the previous government, and we need to reverse this trend by removing the need for them. In the meantime, I’m grateful to the workers and volunteers across Mid Derbyshire and further afield who organise foodbanks week after week – and to all the people who donate to them.

Derventio Housing has an amazing story. It started as a night shelter and now has 700 units of supported housing across a dozen authorities. Their transformation started from realising that night shelters save lives, but they don’t stop residents from rough sleeping forever.

They’ve become an organisation that helps residents build resilience and equips them with the tools they need to manage the long-term challenges that lead to rough sleeping. They help people find work, education or training and improve their physical and mental health as well as supporting them to find a reliable home.

The last Labour government all but ended rough sleeping. Already, the new government has made almost £1 billion available in funding to councils for homelessness support.

It will also provide more early intervention in mental health issues, a key factor in rough sleeping for many. And renters’ rights are being strengthened, which will make housing more secure for millions of people who rent.

I’m hopeful that these will address some of the root causes of homelessness and rough sleeping. In the meantime, Derventio Housing is carrying out a vitally important role saving lives from being lost on our streets.
