The government is acting to cut waiting lists. Its Elective Reform Plan includes:
✅ An interim national target of 65% of people to be seen or treated within 18 weeks of their referral by the end of the year – putting us on a clear pathway to ensuring we meet the 92% milestone by 2029.
✅ Upgrading the NHS App so patients can choose providers, book appointments, and receive test information, all in one place.
✅ The creation of a named patient’s experience champion in all major hospitals.
✅ Up to half a million more appointments available each year thanks to greater access to Community Diagnostic Centres and new or expanded surgical hubs.
✅ Greater patient choice over follow-up care to open up one million appointments.
✅ Using technology to save another million missed appointments.
✅ Compulsory customer service training for administrative staff to improve healthcare communication.
These reforms will mean that thousands more patients will receive a diagnosis and treatment date within a single day – with a follow-up consultation on the same day as their diagnostic test or scan.
People desperately need better and faster access to healthcare, and these first steps will slash our waiting lists.
