It was a solemn privilege to mark Holocaust Memorial Day at Derby Cathedral.

This year, Holocaust Memorial Day falls on the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau.

We must continue to remember all victims of genocide – wherever it has been perpetrated – and redouble our efforts to prevent such atrocities happening again.

The Hungarian oak in the photograph commemorates Olga Nahlak, who was born in 1917 in Ukraine.

Following the Nazi occupation of Ukraine, Olga and her husband risked their lives to hide nine Jewish friends in their own home. Thanks to their courage, they all survived.

Olga settled in Derby in 1965.
