Last week, I met with First Investments (FI) Real Estate Management, the owners of the Belper Mills, to discuss the company’s plans for the site. I also wanted to talk to them about the importance of community involvement.
Supporting the Belper Mills’ regeneration is one of my biggest priorities.
I was therefore pleased to hear that FI Real Estate Management is working closely with Historic England and Amber Valley council to ensure a full heritage assessment is completed which will support the regeneration of the Mills and which will be completed by the autumn.
These proposals could then come to the planning authority as soon as September, when I very much hope that a decision will be made.
I raised with them the importance of partnership working, the strength of the Belper community and the benefits of working together in order to lever in the right kind of financing to make the mills’ redevelopment a success.
I also spoke about the importance of the newly formed East Midlands Combined County Authority, and that Mayor Claire Ward has identified the Derwent Valley Mills as an investment cluster.
I was pleased that FI Real Estate Management has stated it is keen to engage with residents and stakeholders in the local area again soon, and I will support this.
Progress on the development of this site has been stalled for many years now. I am optimistic that we are now within touching distance of a planning decision, and I will continue to support all efforts to deliver on this beautiful site’s potential.
