The immense waterwheels of Arkwright and the Strutts family once tamed our unbridled rivers, turning the natural flow of water into energy to power the Derwent Valley Mills.
Today, the great spokes of the wheels still turn, but often without purpose. We have a chance to tap into our industrial past with a modern twist, using it to create hydroelectric energy to support our clean energy superpower ambitions.
I met with Olly Paish, the designer of the hydro scheme at Cromford Mills, to talk about how hydroelectricity is a stable energy generator that serves our communities for many years due to its long lifespan.
We already have successful schemes set up across the Derwent, at Milford, Belper, Derby, and Cromford. I would like to see us make more use of the amazing opportunities available to us. To do this, we need to look towards the regulations around hydro scheme so that we make them more accessible for our communities.
