I met with the Disabled Children’s Partnership to discuss special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) provision.

Ofsted and the Care Quality Commission found ‘systemic and widespread failings’ in Conservative-run Derbyshire County Council’s provision when they inspected it last year.

Around 60 percent of assessments to see whether a child needs additional support are not processed within the statutory timeframe in Derbyshire under its current Conservative leadership. This is an appalling situation, and our young people deserve better.

The new Labour government is working with councils, schools and the NHS to improve this situation. This includes providing £1 billion extra to support SEND provision.

We now need political leadership at Derbyshire County Council that can put its share of this extra cash to good use. The only way to make sure that happens is by voting Labour this Thursday, so we can be sure of not having a Tory-Reform coalition in county hall continuing to fail our young people.
