It’s not hard to see why so many of us are worried about flooding.
Having your home or businesses filled with water – destroying possessions and items of sentimental value – is frightening and devastating.
It was very valuable that Steve Reed, Secretary of State for the Environment, Food, and Rural Affairs, visited Belper to hear from residents about the importance of being prepared for the risk of flooding.
It is vital that decision-makers get to hear people’s lived experience so that they can better use the levers of government to improve lives. Flooding is becoming more and more of an issue as our climate changes, which also makes addressing the climate emergency an even greater priority.
By addressing the causes of flooding now, and thinking in advance about flood defences, we can get ahead of flood risks and avoid some of the cost and trauma that flooding causes.
