It would be a tragedy to see train manufacturing in the UK end, which is a real possibility if Alstom in Derby closes.
Alstom employs 1,300 people at its Litchurch Lane site, who now have redundancy notices. Some of these workers are Mid Derbyshire residents.
New rollingstock is needed for the UK network, and the government should be ensuring as much of that is produced here as possible.
An order for just five new trains would save the site.
The Tories record on rail is a poor one. Their cancellation of the northern leg of HS2, industrial disputes and wallet-busting fares are driving commuters spare – so ensuring Alstom provides the rolling stock and local jobs we need is something it must ensure.
